start with drawing animation first then save up money to purchase software (or is it hardware?) for a computer animation program

chances are you want to begin starting out with handrawn, even though theres a computer you need to be able to put something or replicate something on paper. You cannot always depend on a computer.

Okay. I’m over fifty and I’m not currently working in animation — just drawing and painting. You know what that means. Be suspicious of what I have to say: it may be dated.

Everyone I’ve known who’s worked for a big company of any sort is either really outstanding or versatile. If you’re not already outstanding I’d go for versatile. Do learn figure drawing. Chuck Jones’s family got him into figure drawing classes when he was just 14. Also study caricature. In the old days (mainly before I was born but extending to when I was little) there were a lot of strips and animated films which mixed caricature and heroic or realistic drawings. Snow White and Fleischer Studio’s Gulliver are two which come to mind. Try to get your hands on some Fleischer stuff, Popeye, Superman and Betty Boop in particular. This is definitely relevant today. I was just watching the last Captain Herlock series from Leiji Matsumoto (2002). While Herlock and most of his senior officers and foes are quite heroic in the anime style, the crew are all 2-4 heads tall and very caricatured.

If you want a look at the early days of computer graphics and drawing, there is a French Cartoonist named Philippe Druillet (and I translated the French Wikipedia article on him into English to get the English Wikipedia article started) who was using computer graphics in his Lone Sloane Comic Strip back in the sixties. His web site features some short films he’s done which include computer graphics and some animation. It’s now close to forty years he’s been doing it and it’s as interesting to see how he hasn’t influenced others as how he has, which he has.

To really find out about computer animation, you can actually download and install on your computer a professional tool. It’s at . I’ll let you look at it and the community. The real bottom line is this: The more you learn about the more likely you are to find something you excel at and are interested in. So go ahead and experiment. You can do computer graphics and try them. But pick up a pencil too. And think about your favorite pictures, and frames from movies, look at them and ask yourself what makes them good. Copying can be a great learning tool.

Colleges with degrees that are ACTUALLY in animation and not just some Graphic Design stressing animation want you to be able to draw. In fact, in many cases, they concentrate aLOT on traditional drawing classes.

Not only that. The college I’m applying for wants you to be able to draw REALISM.

Also, being able to draw well helps you when you translate into the 3D world. Some programs allow you to import images in order to base model on. (like drawing a front and side view of a character).
